Public Speaking Anxiety: Obsessive Thinking at Work
Performance anxiety within a public speaking context is based on worries about being noticeably nervous and losing control due to panic. Physical symptoms such as increased pulse, blushing, breaking out into a sweat, nausea, and eye contact difficulty are common. A myriad of deeper negative thoughts run rampant such as, “people will see who I really am”; “I will humiliate myself”; or “people will not get to see my true ability”. These are characterized by varying degrees of obsessive thinking.

Resolving Fear of Public Speaking: Start the Process
Public speaking anxiety is resolvable when the patient learns to control the “physiology of performance” and understand “autonomic hypersensitivity” concurrent to emotional restructuring. The treatment experiences of Tom, Robert, and others who successfully resolved public speaking and performance integrate cognitive, behavioral, and physiological dynamics.
Jonathan Berent, LCSW, has worked with literally thousands of social anxiety sufferers since 1978. He has heard every facet of anxiety around public speaking - from people who considered getting into accidents to avoid a public speaking engagement - from those who became physically sick to avoid a speaking commitment - to those who said that they would “rather die than speak in a front of a group”.
Jonathan has done well over a thousand television and radio shows - everything from “Oprah” to “Opie and Anthony”.
